Top 10 PU Colleges in Mangalore (2026-27): Streams, Results and How to Choose
Every May, the same scene repeats itself across Mangaluru. SSLC results come out, and within days parents are standing outside college offices at Kodialbail, Bendur and Maryhill with a folder of marks cards and a short list of questions they are not sure how to ask. Which college actually teaches well? Is integrated coaching worth the extra fee? Will my daughter get a hostel seat?
This guide covers ten pre-university colleges in and around Mangaluru that consistently come up in those conversations, along with the five things worth checking before you pay a deposit. We have deliberately not ranked them one to ten. A college that suits a NEET aspirant from Puttur is often the wrong choice for a Commerce student who lives in Kadri, and a numbered list hides that.
Key takeaways
- Dakshina Kannada recorded a 96.35% pass rate in the 2026 II PUC examination, second in Karnataka behind Udupi at 96.39%, against a state average of 86.48%.
- The district has held a top-two position for two years running, improving from 93.57% in 2025.
- Karnataka runs no centralised PUC admission. Each college sets its own cut-off and publishes its own dates, which is why shortlisting early matters.
- Judge a college on five things: board results, whether entrance coaching is inside the timetable, hostel arrangements, faculty continuity, and fee transparency.
Disclosure: this article is published by Canara Vikaas PU College, Mangaluru. Our own college appears first because it is ours, not because it has been ranked above the others. Every other institution is listed alphabetically and described from publicly available information.
What the 2026 PUC results say about studying in Mangaluru

Dakshina Kannada finished second in Karnataka in the 2026 II PUC results with a pass rate of 96.35%, a whisker behind neighbouring Udupi on 96.39% (Mangalore Today, April 2026). The state as a whole passed 86.48%, so the district sat roughly ten points above the Karnataka average.
That gap is not a one-year accident. In 2025 the district recorded 93.57% and again finished second behind Udupi. Two coastal districts have now occupied the top two places in consecutive years, which tells you something real about teaching depth in the region rather than about any single institution.
It also raises the bar. When almost every college in the district clears 90%, a headline pass percentage stops being a useful way to separate them. What separates them now is the distribution of marks: how many students cross 550 out of 600, how many convert a good PUC score into a usable KCET, JEE or NEET rank, and how many drop out of Science into Commerce after the first year.
One structural change is worth knowing before you compare any two colleges. Since 2024 the board has run three attempts a year. In 2026, Exam 1 ran from 28 February to 17 March, Exam 2 from 29 April to 16 May, and Exam 3 in June, with a student allowed to keep the best score across all three (KSEAB). A college quoting “100% results” may be counting after Exam 2 or 3. Ask which one.
The five criteria we used
Rather than score colleges out of ten, here is the checklist we applied to each one. It is the same checklist we would hand a parent who walked into our office.
-
- Board performance with detail. Not just the pass percentage. Ask for the number of students above 550, and the number who appeared, not the number who were permitted to appear.
-
- Entrance coaching inside the timetable. A college that finishes at 3:30 pm and expects the student to travel to a separate coaching centre until 8 pm is selling you two things and delivering neither well. Integrated means the coaching hour sits between the physics lab and the chemistry class.
-
- Hostel arrangements. Roughly half the Science students in this district come from Puttur, Sullia, Belthangady, Kasaragod and further afield. On-campus hostels with supervised study hours behave very differently from a room rented near the college.
-
- Faculty continuity. Ask how long the current physics and mathematics lecturers have been at the college. High turnover in the second year is the single most common complaint we hear from transferring students.
-
- Fee transparency. Get tuition, coaching, hostel, lab and study-material charges as separate line items in writing before the deposit. Under Karnataka’s admission structure many aided colleges fill half their seats through the government quota and half through management quota, and the two are priced very differently.
Ten PU colleges worth shortlisting in Mangaluru
Two entries below sit outside the city limits, at Moodbidri and Ujire, both within Dakshina Kannada. They are included because Mangaluru families routinely consider them, particularly for residential options, and leaving them out would make this list less useful.
Canara Vikaas PU College, Maryhill
Canara Vikaas sits on Airport Road at Maryhill and was started in 2012 by the Canara High School Association, the body that has run institutions in this city since Canara High School opened at Kodialbail in 1891. The association also runs Canara Vikaas Physiotherapy College and Canara Vikaas First Grade College on the same academic campus, so a student who finishes PUC here has a route forward without changing management.
The college teaches in English and offers PCMB and PCMC for Science, along with a Commerce combination built around Business Studies, Accountancy and Statistics. Entrance coaching for NEET, JEE and KCET is built into the working day rather than bolted on in the evening, which is the arrangement we would defend most strongly out of everything we do. Separate supervised hostel blocks for boys and girls sit on campus, so outstation students are not commuting after evening study hours.
What to ask us: our year-wise Science and Commerce pass figures, which board attempt those figures refer to, the coaching syllabus map against the KSEAB syllabus, and current hostel availability for your combination. We would rather answer those questions in the admission office than have you take them on trust from a webpage.

Alva’s PU College, Moodbidri
Founded in 1998 by Dr M Mohan Alva, this is the largest residential PU campus in the district and roughly 35 km from Mangaluru city. It offers Science, Commerce and Arts with integrated NEET, JEE and KCET coaching. Disha, a commerce student here, topped Karnataka in 2026 with a perfect 600 out of 600. Worth a look if a fully residential setting suits your child; the scale takes some adjusting to.
Canara PU College, Mangaluru
The older of the two pre-university colleges run by the Canara High School Association, established in 1972, offering Science and Commerce in English medium. It has a long record in Commerce in particular. Deepashree from this college shared the state Commerce top score in 2025 with 599 out of 600. A sensible choice for a day scholar living within the city.
Expert PU College, Valachil
The strongest recent board record in the district by some distance. In 2025, 33 of its students placed inside the state top ten and Amoolya Kamath topped Karnataka in Science with 599 out of 600; of 1,634 students who appeared, 1,627 secured first class. In 2026 Shamanyu S Shetty and Nandan Nayak each scored 598 out of 600. The trade-off is a demanding, exam-focused routine that not every student wants.
Govinda Dasa PU College, Surathkal
Run by the Hindu Vidyadayanee Sangha at Surathkal, with the wider Govindadasa institution dating to 1967. It serves the northern belt of the city well, from Surathkal down to Baikampady and Panambur, and is a practical option for families who want a reputable college without a long daily commute into town.
Milagres PU College, Hampankatta
A city-centre institution offering Arts, Science and Commerce, with roots going back to 1982. Its location near Hampankatta makes it one of the easiest colleges in Mangaluru to reach by bus from almost any part of the city, which matters more to a sixteen-year-old’s attendance record than most parents expect.
SDM PU College, Ujire
Established in 1966 under the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society, which now runs more than fifty institutions across Karnataka. It offers Science, Commerce and Arts and has a separate residential PU college at Ujire. It is a long way from Mangaluru at roughly 65 km, so treat it as a residential option rather than a commutable one.
Sharada PU College, Kodialbail
Part of the Sharada group under the Tulunadu Educational Trust and running since 1998, on the SKDB campus near PVS Kalakunj. It offers an unusually wide set of Science combinations, including PCMB, PCMC, PCME and PCMS, which helps if your child wants Mathematics with Electronics or Statistics rather than the standard two options.
St Agnes PU College, Bendur
A women’s institution at Bendur run by the Apostolic Carmel sisters, whose college at Mangaluru opened in 1921 as the first Catholic women’s college in South India. Science, Commerce and Arts are all offered. Families looking specifically for a girls’ college with an established pastoral structure tend to start here.
St Aloysius PU College, Kodialbail
Run by the Jesuits through the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society, on the Kodialbail campus where St Aloysius institutions have operated since 1880. Science, Commerce and Arts are offered, and the college retains a reputation for discipline and for a strong Arts stream, which is harder to find in this district than Science or Commerce.

How to actually shortlist, in the four weeks you have
Karnataka has no common PUC admission portal. The Department of Pre-University Education issues an admission schedule after SSLC results are declared, and each college then publishes its own cut-off on its notice board or website (DPUE Karnataka). In practice that leaves families four to six weeks, and the good Science seats go in the first two.
A workable sequence:
-
- Fix the stream before the college. Your SSLC Mathematics and Science subject marks matter more here than the aggregate. Most Science cut-offs are set on those two.
-
- Decide day scholar or hostel first. This removes half the list immediately and saves a fortnight of visits.
-
- Visit three campuses on a working day. Not on an admission Sunday. You want to see a classroom in session and a lab actually being used.
-
- Ask second-year students, not the office. Two questions work well: has your physics lecturer changed since last year, and what time does the coaching class actually end.
-
- Get the full fee breakdown in writing before paying any deposit, and confirm what is refundable.
If your child is aiming at engineering or medicine, the entrance timetable should shape the decision as much as the board one. KCET is conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), while JEE Main and NEET are run by the National Testing Agency (NTA). A college whose coaching finishes its syllabus in January leaves a real revision window; one that is still teaching in March does not.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best PU college in Mangalore?
There is no single answer, and any college claiming otherwise about itself is selling rather than advising. Expert PU College has the strongest recent board results in the district, Alva’s and SDM are the established residential campuses, St Aloysius and St Agnes carry the longest institutional histories, and Canara Vikaas is built around integrated entrance coaching with on-campus hostels. Match the college to the student.
What percentage is needed for PUC Science admission in Mangaluru?
The state requirement is only an SSLC pass. Individual colleges set their own merit cut-offs, and in this district the competitive Science seats usually go to students in the high seventies and above, weighted towards Mathematics and Science subject marks. Cut-offs are published by each college after SSLC results.
Is integrated NEET or JEE coaching in PU college better than a separate coaching centre?
For most students, yes, mainly because of time. Integrated coaching removes the daily commute and the duplication of teaching the same chapter twice in two different sequences. A separate centre can work for a self-directed student, but it typically adds two to three hours to the day.
How many attempts does a student get in the Karnataka II PUC exam?
Three. KSEAB conducts Exam 1, Exam 2 and Exam 3 in the same academic year, and a student may retain the best score across all three. Passing requires at least 30 marks in each subject and 33% in aggregate. Results are published at karresults.nic.in.
Do Mangaluru PU colleges offer hostel facilities for outstation students?
Several do, including Canara Vikaas, Alva’s, SDM and St Agnes. Ask specifically whether the hostel is on campus or off, whether study hours are supervised, and what the boy-to-girl block arrangement is. On-campus supervised hostels and rented off-campus rooms are very different propositions.
Before you decide
Dakshina Kannada gives you an unusual luxury: a dozen genuinely capable colleges within an hour of each other. That also means the decision rarely comes down to which college is best in the abstract. It comes down to stream fit, travel, hostel, and whether your child will still be motivated in February of the second year.
Take the five-point checklist above to every campus you visit, including ours. If integrated NEET, JEE or KCET preparation with on-campus hostels is what you are after, come and see how the Canara Vikaas timetable is actually built before you commit anywhere.
